G-MA

Around the age of 15 my great grandmother had been diagnosed with cancer this is while I was living in NYC. Once word had gotten back to my mother we immediately moved to Rochester NY to take care of her. My mother and I came up every Christmas to celebrate the holidays with her; she was really close with my mother so it was only right. My mothers mom passed when she was only 12 so I assume this is the reason were they were close.

The move to Rochester was a tough one for me I had to start up at a new school in the middle of the year make new friends and get adjusted to living sheltered due to the crime in the city and their basically being nothing to do, its nothing like NYC I couldn’t go or do anything on my own. With my mother working the hours she did we had to have a nurses aid come in check her vital signs, make sure medication was taken and check her oxygen tanks to see if they needed to be changed while I was at school.

I never had anytime to do after school activities since we moved I no longer fenced and rec centers weren’t really the best place to play basketball. As time progressed her condition worsened and my mother had to shorten her hours and I would also leave school sooner to get home. I remember one afternoon while my grandmother was still active we walked to midtown, which was then the mall in downtown Rochester, it’s no longer there now. We walked up to the pharmacy inside if the mall and also stopped in hallmark to get a few postcards for her friends, the weather got a little chilly as we walked back, I started to notice her breathing heavily and I called my mother who told me to check her oxygen tank. I did as she asked and realized the tank was empty so I held onto her until we reached her floor in the apartment building.

Once we reached her floor the breathing started to slow and she became dead weight. My great grandmother fainted in the elevator and instead of panicking had like an adrenaline rush; somehow I was able to carry her all the way to the apartment get her inside her down on the bed and call for help. The paramedics came and got her condition stabilized. She had run out of oxygen, which is what caused her to go into shock.

The next day had to have been her best day while ill, we played cards watched tv laughed and all the things she would normally do when we stayed inside the house, It was awkward cause while my mother prepared dinner I was watching Tv and out of nowhere my great grandmother started to foam out of the mouth, I yelled for my mother to come she automatically went into panic mode. I grabbed her tongue so she wouldn’t choke on it and at the same time had my mother call the paramedics, I stood by my grandmother until the very end, at one point I grabbed her hand and she gripped tight and looked at me, once I felt her let go I knew that it was over. The paramedics came and brought her to unity hospital. Once we reached the hospital they went into the lockdown procedure because a dead person had arrived. At that point I just left the hospital because I didn’t want someone telling me something I already knew.

Writing News In The Digital Age.

The Internet has come to change the way we receive information today. In so many ways, the Internet has shoved aside old-fashioned letters, the kind written on stationery or letterhead. Email, texting, Twitter, Skype and social media have also overshadowed faxes, postcards and telegrams. In today’s world, writing skills involve much more than penmanship and para-graphs—and counter to those who see pervasive technology as part of the “writing problem,” many teachers are using technology tools to strengthen students’ writing skills and engage their interest in writing. Writing or reporting in todays media now consist more of images. Tumblr is a good example, majority of the users post only pictures. The tumblr world is only a big scrap book.
